New trends in innovation Solution
Inclusive Innovation and Social Innovation
Trends in innovation field has gained momentum in recent years. Different businesses and individuals have taken the initiative to make a difference in innovation field through developing innovative technology as a means to meets customer needs while setting global trends. This is because with different social problems coming up every time like poverty, inequality, and inclusion, coming with technological trends to address the issues is the way to go to change the lives of individuals and communities at large. This means that trends in innovation will continue to be realized with different entities looking for means of solving issues in the society.
Social innovation refers to innovation trends that focuses mostly on needs ass well as finding solutions to social problems that people face in the society. Social innovation therefore can be defined as innovative services and activities whose main motivation for development is based on the goal of meeting the social needs that are predominantly present in organizations and societies that give priority to the social concept (Westley et al., 2017). The increase in trends of social innovation is tied mainly in organizations seeking for ways of ensuring that solutions to social problems are found. In essence, social innovation is seen as a concept that provides management strategy that is essential in strengthening the relations of a society that is entrepreneurial in nature with aims of ensuring that environmental conditions are improved. In the last two decade the concept of social innovation has gained relevance from the perspective that traditional solutions started being seen not to offer adequate solutions to social problems that are deeply rooted in society (Westley et al., 2017). Therefore, social innovations have come in place to enable the development of sustainable solutions to deal with social issues in the society. The whole process of social innovation include the aspect of generating, implementing and growing an idea.
Evolution of social innovation
The origin of social innovation can be traced back to the 19th century owing to the rise in workers movements. The late 19th century and early 20th century, saw the innovation term being started to be referred as social invention and social innovation as a designated term to infer to social reforms and social transformations (Daniel & Jenner, 2022). With the term innovation eventually graduating to be associated with businesses and technology, the term social innovation remained to be inferior to the actual innovation term. This is because, currently, social innovation is seen to an inferior or subproduct of the real innovation while in actual sense the term innovation was used first to refer to social transformations and processes before the term being later labelled with technology. With growing concerns of issues and awareness that later came to be termed as sustainability, climate change, human trafficking, new forms of migrations, anti-systemic movements and crisis of welfare state; the several issues have shown the fact it is difficult for the problems to be mitigated and solved an aspect that has drawn scientific communities to looking into concepts of social innovations (Daniel & Jenner, 2022). In 20th century, the concept of social innovation gained a lot of interests given that the whole scenario presented the promise of offering the needed solutions. In essence, social innovation is closely linked with sustainability as well as concepts to improve lives of individuals thus the development of social innovation in line with the need of being a tool to solve social problems.
Over the past few years, social innovation as a concept has evolved over time with academicians and authors working to find answers of the remaining challenge of defining the concept of social innovation by putting into perspective the academic and social agendas associated with the concept (Daniel & Jenner, 2022). Mulgan as an author saw social innovation to be a new concept and ideas that works to respond to social needs that are unmet. From the time of Global Financial Crisis, the level of social innovation has been increasing in policy and academic communities in search to focus on social economy. Recently, social innovations have started to connect more with private and third sectors given that the concept has been influences by the growth of social entrepreneurial activity and social enterprise including the concepts of corporate social responsibility in relation to business (Daniel & Jenner, 2022). This therefore, has rose the grassroot connectivity of community-based collection action with the help of diverse institutions and networks found in state, market and the civil society.
With the recent challenges of covid-19, there has been a drastic social innovation given that the period has been characterized with change in perception with many engaging in shifts of social relations (Satalkina & Steiner, 2022). Disparate and diverse groups of communities have changed the manner that they interact and take actions of innovations in order to satisfy the common unmet needs like the need for people to connect and identify with like-minded community when confined in their home isolation. The developed social innovations included aspects of applauding health workers from balconies and rooftops as witnessed in Italy, Spain, and Britain including the aspect of happy hour clubs being virtually created for workers locked down (Satalkina & Steiner, 2022). Therefore, some of the grounded social innovations include the emergent communities acting spontaneously to connect into new types of social relations to enrich, empower and engage their member illustratively. This therefore, indicates a shift in paradigm based on the way people think concerning social innovation as well as acknowledging power plus the role that bottom-up initiatives play in the realization of relevance, value and situated wellbeing (Satalkina & Steiner, 2022).
Given that social innovation entails the process of utilizing novel solutions in the market to global environmental and social problems through developing or improving services, products, business models and processes plus market to ensure that they efficiently respond to unmet societal needs; This means that social innovations are critical in ensuring that different issues in the society are dealt with through the development of new ways to tackle the issues (Comini et al., 2021). For instances, with the current economic crisis being experienced global wise, nations and individuals are developing policies in line with economic and social spheres to ensure that the unmet needs that include people experiencing increase social problems that requires social innovations for the issue to be handled. Social innovations therefore, benefits the society as a whole given that the value generated are usually consolidated for the whole society instead of being tied to private individuals given that the general focus is mainly is attaining systemic transformations that are usually geared towards getting long term solutions for the whole society (Comini et al., 2021).
Social innovations are also beneficial to organizations and societies through assisting in solving issues by means of coming up with new solutions in terms of distance learning, fair trade, mobile money transfer, zero carbon housing and restorative justice (Comini et al., 2021). Thus, the process of changing and creating solutions the whole process in mainly entangled with change in basic practices, beliefs, social power structures and resources (“Social innovation creates prosperous societies (SSIR),” n.d.). For instance, in the recent increase of students taking part in distance learning, the fact that the whole scenario is helping in solving the unmet needs of students from regions without the quality they need, is a social innovation that not only benefits one individual but the ultimate achievement of the process is the society benefiting is getting services from qualified individuals in different fields that will in the end impact the social and economic aspects of the area (Comini et al., 2021). This means that the whole world will be benefiting from business engagement, social enterprises and philanthropy as a result of the social innovation providing a unique chance for people to move away from past narrow thinking and to begin to see the interconnectedness of stakeholders and different factors in a bid to solve all the unmet social needs in the society (“Social innovation creates prosperous societies (SSIR),” n.d.).
Social innovations also benefits individuals and societies given that the whole concept of social innovation comes down to mindset that is driven by openness, purpose, accountability, innovation and partnership that are meant to come up with solutions that allows alienated or excluded people to take part in the economy while ensuring that there is conservation and the natural capital are replenished (“Social innovation creates prosperous societies (SSIR),” n.d.). Social innovation is also important because it helps in promoting aspects of sustainability, development and inclusion. This means that the society, individuals and organizations get to engage in actions that promotes concepts of sustainability and inclusion primarily as a means to attain social innovation an aspect that makes them to benefit from increase in resource exploitation in terms of human talents to find solutions to unmet needs (“Social innovation creates prosperous societies (SSIR),” n.d.). For instance, the covid-19 greatly affected the tourism sector with more women being affected with a lot of gender-based violence with women being affected hugely by loss of jobs hence facing social issues of not being able to pay for healthcare.
Inclusive technology includes measures put in place to ensure that there is fair distribution of innovation benefits. For instance, governments usually develop measures like taxation to see to it that extreme wealth that is created by digital platforms and companies are shared with people that assisted in development of the wealth (Opola et al., 2020). Inclusive innovations also include regulations from the government and institutions with intentions to prevent monopolies to ensure that consumers rights of ownership based on aspects of data streams. Inclusive innovation also encompasses the introduction of profit-sharing mechanisms by the government like venture capital funds to enable the government to get revenue from successful technologies that are emerging (Opola et al., 2020).
Evolution of Inclusive innovation
The models of inclusive innovation have been developed from the concept of inclusive development or the aspect of shared property as propagated by the United Nation Development Program and World Bank. The concept of inclusive innovation being tied to the aspect of shared prosperity originated from the original mainstream innovation that is basically associated with increase in inequality that keeps being registered in all corners of the world. Inclusive innovation is however associated with the aspect of wanting to reduce inequality an aspect that leads to increase in growing engagement with inclusive innovation for purposes of addressing issues of inequality by different international organizations like the World Bank. Equally national governments like India in 2011 also joined the discussion including China and multinationals like Tata and Unilever joining the center stage in 2014 (Opola et al., 2020). Intellectuals have also joined the inclusive innovation engagement with journalists making special issues on current issues touching on inclusive innovation. With pioneers of inclusive innovation increasing matter of advocacy different organizations, societies and individuals are now joining the whole concept with United Nation taking the lead in fighting for the rights of marginalized communities and groups through taking part in development of policies suitable to different regions in the world. For instance, the United Nation in particular has been focal in fighting for the rights of women by speaking against gender-based violence and working to empower women through connecting young girls to acquire basic education to later gain meaningful employments to earn decent income that ultimately promotes equality in work places with women being able to cater for their needs (Opola et al., 2020). Therefore, with increasing trends in cropping of issues and problems in the society, it is evident that inclusive innovation will continue to gain importance and recognition in all sphere of life in future. Inclusive innovation has also evolved to the level that in the past five years different organizations and institutions have come up to fight issues of inequality ranging from work place inequality, gender-based violence and inclusivity being advocated for different groups in society. This means that financing programs that seek to enable women, marginalized groups and low-income earners will assist in advancing inclusive innovation through financial support (Opola et al., 2020). This is because through the financing of different programs the general goal that will be reached include the attainment of making it possible for the people that needed to be included getting motivated to want to participate in inclusive innovative activities.
Role and benefit of inclusive innovation
Inclusive innovations play an important role in increasing effectiveness and innovation that impacts created efforts to ensure that sustainable development agenda for 2030 is attained (Opola et al., 2020). This is because by working to see to it that matters of inclusivity is attained through eliminating issues like inequality, the whole situation leads to a scenario where all members of society are positively working towards the attainment of the needed aspects in the society. Additionally, through inclusive innovations the whole spectrum of people accessing health-care services and education will be increased creating an avenue where individuals that were marginalized in the past get the opportunity to participate in the development agenda with re-current problems being eliminated (Opola et al., 2020). The concept of inclusive innovations also benefits the society given that it allows the development of environmentally sustainable policies meant to care for given group of people that ultimately leads to development paths that takes care of natural resources for benefits to the whole society.
Inclusive technology also benefited local communities given that the whole concept on inclusivity has been tied to ensured that there is fair distribution of property given other forms of technology in the past has excluded rural communities hence inclusive technology comes in to fight for the rights of excluded individuals and communities (Heeks et al., 2014). Inclusive technology also ensures that different regions are accorded unique policies that ensures that existing inequality in the area based on previous injustices are eliminated to make the whole region begin to feel the positive impacts of inclusive innovations.
Therefore, despite the government developing policies around inclusive innovation, it is worth noting that developed policies on area like taxation has been used to hurt societies and organizations (Opola et al., 2020). This is because in the interest of the government to fight for inclusivity innovation to be implemented by organizations, different firm have paid the price of spending many resources to comply an aspect that has hurt productivity for individuals and organizations.
The changing dynamics in the world on innovations is an important aspect that when explored will ensure that social innovation and inclusive innovation is attained. This is because with the two aspects of technology working to ensure that marginalized people and disadvantaged groups are included on matters of technology, understanding ways to make the groups to benefits becomes an important aspect in making necessary for policies to be developed to for the individuals. In essence, social and inclusive technology impacts individuals, societies and organizations by making it possible for policies to be developed those benefits either side including the government of the day.
