Program Outcome #1: Provide high quality, safe, patient-centered care grounded in holistic health principles. (holistic health & patient-centered care)
MSN Essential I: Background for Practice from Sciences and Humanities:
Recognizes that the master’s prepared nurse integrates scientific findings from nursing, biopsychosocial fields, genetics, public health, quality improvement, and organizational sciences for the continual improvement of nursing care across diverse settings.
Nurse Practitioner Core Competencies # 1 Scientific Foundation Competencies
- Critically analyzes data and evidence for improving advanced nursing practice.
- Integrates knowledge from the humanities and sciences within the context of nursing science.
- Translates research and other forms of knowledge to improve practice processes and outcomes.
- Develops new practice approaches based on the integration of research, theory, and practice knowledge.

Throughout this class, I have been challenged a lot. Reflecting back on the course and its objectives I feel that they were definitely met. The first program outcome and in my opinion the most important is the delivery of safe patient-centered care grounded in holistic principles. This was accomplished by increasing our understanding of disease pathophysiology at the cellular level.
While this information by itself to some might seem inconsequential the advanced nurse practitioner can utilize this information to help drive treatment options and determine the best medication management plans. The in-depth understanding will help to ensure that the safest care can be delivered, and that patient education can be conducted so that they remain at the epicenter of their treatment plan.
This course outcome also addressed MSN essential 1 by expanding our understanding of the human body and its systems. As my career advances I don’t know or can even imagine each and every role or position I might have but regardless whether it be instilling policy or practicing at the bedside the scientific fundamentals learned in this course will help root many of my decisions.
Our last assignment was to create a presentation and deliver it to our classmates. I watched many of the presentations and learned a great deal. In my presentation on hyperthyroidism, I learned not only the pathophysiology behind the disease but also the intricacies of creating a professional presentation for my peers. The presentation integrated the knowledge gained into an inclusive understanding of the disease, its treatments, and complications. One of the best ways of obtaining a thorough understanding of a disease process is to teach it to a peer as if they have no knowledge of the material. This enhances not only the learners understanding but the presenters as well (Aldridge, 2018). This project addressed the nurse core competencies #1 of establishing a scientific foundation and integrating knowledge to practice by engaging us to understand the disease process rather than just reiterate data.
To date for me, this was the most involved course that I have taken at the graduate level. While much of the class was built on concepts, I learned many years ago I found that the discussions and lectures were focused and supported by the reading refreshed and enhanced my understanding of pathophysiology.
